Welcome to Old Buckenham Methodist Church online...

We gather together as a friendly group of Christians from Old Buckenham, and all points North, South, East and West.

Our doors are always open and welcoming on a Sunday when we meet for worship (10-45am). We also have a Songs of Praise on the 3rd Wednesday evening of each month.

“Sing a new song” is on the first Sunday of each month at 6.30pm. This is an informal time of praise and worship, and you will be made very welcome to this, as to all our events. Please just bring yourself, your family and your friends, and be assured of a blessed and friendly time with us.

Old Buckenham Scarecrow Trail 'Winners'!

We were really pleased that Old Buckenham Parish Council announced a Scarecrow Trail in the village, so to join in and also promote the church and its 150th Anniversary we decided to enter creating 10 scarecrows plus a 'crow' with some dressed in '1871' costume and some in modern day. Lo and behold we then went and won the competition! So thanks to everyone who helped.

150th Anniversary Church Service

On Sunday 30th May 2021 Old Buckenham Methodist Church was exactly 150 years old.

To celebrate we had a special open air service.

FAREWELL TO JACQUI & JEN

Dear Friends,
I have been the minister of Old Buckenham Methodist Church for 9 years now, juggling responsibilities with my commitments to four other Methodist Churches in the area. New Buckenham also came under my care until it sadly had to close in October 2017.
I will always treasure the memories of my time in the Buckenhams. I have fond memories of speaking at Old Buckenham WI, of taking part in the annual quiz, of enjoying the New Buckenham pantomimes, of speaking one year at the Old Buckenham Christmas Eve Carol Service, of sharing with New Buckenham Anglicans at a Christingle in the Chapel and at a service dedicating the Methodist war memorials in the Church. In the life of the Chapels, I will always remember the monthly Songs of Praise times, the Table-Top Sales, the Flower Festivals, the Coffee Mornings and the reinvention of the Old Buckenham Women’s Fellowship into the Chapel Friendship Group (CFG). The final service when we closed New Buckenham Methodist Church was a special and moving occasion with the Chapel full of friends.
So, what of the future? Chapels in rural villages are struggling and closing up and down the country. The Chapel in Old Buckenham continues thanks to the hard work and energy of the remaining half a dozen or so members. However, it is vulnerable and needs support. The continuing CFG, Songs of Praise evenings, and special events attract people from the community and from other denominations. I estimate our family of supporters numbering about 25 – 30 overall. But, it is the Sunday services that the wider institution looks at in terms of viability, as well as finances, and the need for ministerial support. This particular Chapel is worth keeping! It is fulfilling a valuable role in the village in which it is set and beyond. I appeal to readers of this magazine to support the core members in their endeavours if you can.
As to my own future – I am moving to Swaffham to be the Superintendent of the Central Norfolk Methodist Circuit. A Superintendent oversees the geographical area of a Rural Dean and has some of the authority of a Bishop. My new Circuit goes deep into the heart of rural Norfolk and carries the issues of rural free churches writ large. So, it will be a challenge and a responsibility but, in a sense, I am prepared for it through my ministry in the villages of south Norfolk. And, of course, I believe that God is in charge and providing the resources. I trust God for my own future and for that of the rural Methodist Chapels everywhere trust in those I leave behind, trust in the local community, trust in God. The last-named has, ultimately, the safest pair of hands one can imagine (if God has hands!) and so, as Julian of Norwich famously said, ‘All manner of things will be well’.

We would like to extend a great big thank you to everyone who baked cakes, donated to the lucky dip, raffle and tombola and came along to help out at the coffeee morning on Saturday 18th April. We raised an amazing £260 towards the Chapel funds.
